Once when Mount
Saint Helens erupted
hot rock seared life out of
every pulsing thing; gray ash and
dust entombed the char that a second before
had been plant and animal and person, sealing all in
graves the size of cities, the depths of seas. Scientists, who
are schooled in such matters, avowed that nothing would live in that
place for decades. They could not account, just five years later, for the single
lupine that appeared, each leaf stalk a perfect six-pointed star, green spears pointing in
every direction, the tangle of amethyst flowers, laughter bubbled up from the belly of earth.

  1. Hi Libby, Susannah, and Lucy,

I was just talking to my son (Wednesday nights are "burrito" night and a call home!) who was telling me about something weird--that someone had posted a poem of mine on her webpage (he had been Pipl-ing me and saw your blog). So, I checked it and and saw that you had put the poem I sent to your dad on your blog. I am honored. I am touched to read all of your loving words about your sister, and hers about you. And, I'm enjoying the photos and so glad I got to meet Susannah and Lucy, at least, this past Christmas. Libby, sorry I missed you. So, I am your first blog commenter! Sheri
