And the days are not full enough
And the nights are not full enough
And life slips by
Like a field mouse
Not shaking the grass.
- Ezra Pound

in celebration of surviving

when senselessness has pounded you around on the ropes
and you’re getting too old to hold out for the future
no work and running out of money,
and then you make a try after something that you know you won’t get
and this long shot comes through on the stretch
in a photo finish of your heart’s trepidation
then for a while
even the chill factor of these prairie winters puts it at fifty below
you’re warm and have that old feeling
of being a comer, though belated
in the crazy game of live

standing in the winter night
emptying the garbage and looking at the stars
you realize although the odds are fantastically against you
when that single January shooting star
flung its wad in the maw of night
it was yours
and though the years are edged with crime and squalor
that second wind, or twenty-third
is coming strong
and for a time
perhaps a very short time
one lives as though in a golden envelope of light
- Chuck Miller

There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world even though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for mankind.
- Hannah Senesh

Evening

At the end of the gift of light, returning,
Draw, with white arm raised, the effective curtain,
Swiftly serry the folds in ranks of twilight,
Strike the camp of the day. Within are burning
Small reliable suns of yellow lamplight
On the fields of our room, where all is certain.
-E. B. White

You are every wish
on every star in every
sky for me tonight.
- Tyler Knott Gregson

You can feel the electricity
All in the evening air
And it may just be more of the same
But sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name
So I guess I'll have to wait and see
But I'm just gonna let something brand new happen to me
- Cee Lo Green

I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.
- Galileo Galilei

12.30.2010

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
- William Butler Yeats

12.29.2010

Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet dreams
- Dixie Chicks

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
- The Beatles

In the darkness of the window
I can hardly get to sleep
Wish for the hour that
The nighttime soon shall pass
And the morning dew will bring us
To a day our souls can last
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
- Gavin Degraw

She walked by the ocean,
And waited for a star,
To carry her away.

Feeling so small,
At the bottom of the world,
Looking up to God.

She tries to take deep breaths,
To smell the salty sea,
As it moves over her feet.

The water pulls so strong,
And no-one is around,
And the moon is looking down.

Saying,
Rosie - come with me,
Close your eyes - and dream.

The big ships are rolling,
And lighting up the night,
And she calls out, but they just pass her by.

The waves are crashing,
But not making a sound,
Just mouthing along.

Saying,
Rosie - come with me,
Close your eyes and dream,
Close your eyes and dream,
Close your eyes and dream.
- Norah Jones

Starry nights city lights coming down over me
Skyscrapers and stargazers in my head
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
This dirty town was burning down in my dreams
Lost and found city bound in my dreams
- Green Day

"Goodnight stars, goodnight air, goodnight noises everywhere."
- Good Night Moon, by Margaret Wise Brown

And now I'm static
As your sky is turning purple and gray
I'm learning that the further that I crawl,
The farther that I fall, is that okay?
-Something Corporate

Love is like the wind...you cant see it, but you can feel it.
- Unknown

It was just another night
With a sun set and a moon rise
Not so far behind
To give us just enough light
To lay down underneath the stars
Listen to Papa's translations
Of the stories across the sky
We drew our own constellations...
- Jack Johnson
